Courtney moved to the island in 2005 with her partner Bill to teach music and drama at North Haven Community School, Maine’s smallest K-12 public school. Finding her summers relatively free, she began baking in small quantities for Farmers’ Market in 2007 and founded Little Urchin Bakery in 2008. In addition to teaching and baking, she sings and plays keyboard and vocoder in 8BITches, directs several plays each year, and has bartended, prep-cooked, and waited tables at every restaurant on the island. She can also be heard weekly on a podcast about bad movies, the F List.
Betsy moved to North Haven in the fall of 2008. One of the few history majors to actually gain employment in the field, Betsy’s work on the island is centered at the North Haven Historical Society and North Haven Community School. She has worked summers at Atlantic Baking Company in Rockland, where her intense interest in bread dough and piecrust developed. She thinks that small-scale, sustainable agriculture is really cool and, of late, can be found coaxing early peas from the island soil. Ultimately, she would like to grow her own wheat and grind her own flour. She occasionally attempts stealth bread deliveries on her bike.
