Our Island

North Haven is one of Maine’s surviving unbridged island communities. It supports a year-round community of about 380 people, a K-12 school, one store, one gas pump, and no stoplights. The island has a rich agricultural history in addition to its more obvious fishing heritage. North Haven was once famous for its lamb, which could be found by name on menus in Boston, and island produce was freighted by steamship to various mainland locations. This heritage is maintained today in the island’s numerous home gardens and farms.

Sheep Meadow Farm sells eggs year-round, and lamb and honey seasonally. Turner Farm, one of the only old island farms whose property has remained intact over the years, is currently being restored to a working farm and will soon become another source of island-grown food.
